In 1980, Keith Haring began creating public artworks in the New York City subway. The empty black advertising spaces attracted Haring, who would draw quickly on the blank paper before jumping on the next train. The 'Subway Drawings' gained recognition amongst commuters who would often stop and talk to the artist as he worked.
