'St Louis surrounded by snakes' features the professional American boxer Joe Louis who held the longest reign as champion of any heavyweight boxer in history and was the first African American person to achieve status of a nation-wide hero. Jean-Michel Basquiat depicted Louis as a saint, indicated by the halo above his head and surrounded him by his managerial team that Basquiat refers to as 'snakes' as they notoriously cashed in on his success.
