Georgia O’Keeffe was a key pioneer in the emergence of American modern art and was best known for her sensuous paintings recording the natural world. During the mid-1920s O’Keeffe started to produce near-abstract paintings of natural forms including 'Green Oak Leaves'. O’Keeffe filled the entire canvas with intertwined leaves rendered in different shades of green. By painting the leaves against a light blue background O’Keeffe has ensured that the leaves stand out on the canvas.
