Georgia O’Keeffe was a key pioneer in the emergence of American modern art and was best known for her sensuous paintings recording the natural world. During the mid-1920s O’Keeffe started to produce near-abstract paintings of natural forms and produced a series of sunflower paintings. 'Sunflower New Mexico ' was created whilst O’Keeffe was working in New Mexico in Southwest America. O’Keeffe depicted the flower against a vivid blue background and enhanced the yellow qualities of the flower to reflect the warm weather of the region.
