Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. One of the most important early Fauvist paintings, 'The Open Window, Collioure' is distinguished by bold brushstrokes of saturated, unmixed colours straight from the tube. This work was exhibited at the landmark Salon d'automne of 1905, where Matisse and others first received the label 'fauve' (wild beast) in reaction to their unconventional use of colour.
