Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. According to Greek mythology, Icarus was the son of the skilled architect and famous craftsman Daedalus. His father designed wings made out of wax and feathers for his son to escape from the island of Minos. However, Icarus ignored his advice and flew close to the sun melting his wings and plummeting into the sea. Having just recovered from abdominal cancer in 1941, Henri Matisse identified with the Greek mythological tale as the surgery limited him to a chair. Unable to paint and sculpt, Matisse created 'Jazz', an art book filled with collages, dedicating the first image to Icarus falling amongst stars.
