Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. Following surgery for stomach cancer in 1941, Henri Matisse was left bed-bound and could no longer paint or sculpt. With the help of his assistants, he began creating art again. Using scissors, the artist would cut shapes from sheets of paper painted with gouache colours. For Matisse, the colour blue signified both distance and volume. His use of solid fields of single colour inspired several artists. This group of painters became known as the ‘Fauvists’, as they emphasized colour over the realistic values of Impressionism.
