Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. Henri Matisse’s series of nude cutouts were inspired by his collection of African sculptures and a trip he took to Tahiti, the largest island in French Polynesia, in 1930. Twenty years later, Matisse synthesized his African curiosities and Polynesian travels to create this series of iconic artworks.
