Modern artist Jackson Pollock was a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. Pollock was widely noticed for his "drip technique" of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface. 'Blue Poles' was first titled 'Number 11'. The original painting contains fragments of glass and footprints can be seen in several places around the edge of the canvas.
