Raoul Dufy was a French painter who was associated with Fauvism, an art movement established by a group of early 20th century modern artists whose work emphasised painterly qualities and strong colours over realism. In 1926 he produced ‘Promenade a Nice’ which depicts stylish pedestrians moving about the renowned stretch of coastline in the French north western city of Nice. Influenced by fellow French artists Claude Monet and Henri Matisse, Dufy found inspiration in the joy of leisure activities, particularly those bathed in sunlight like sailing and horse racing.
