Georgia O’Keeffe was a key pioneer in the emergence of American modern art and was best known for her sensuous paintings recording the natural world. During the mid-1920s O’Keeffe started to produce near-abstract artworks of natural forms including ‘Dark Iris’ a study produced for her series of black Iris paintings. O’Keeffe used a variety of colours to create this painting but mainly drew attention to the dark shades of the flower.
