In 1876 modern French impressionist artist Paul Cezanne returned to his native South of France, residing in a fishing village near Marseille known as L’Estaque. Cézanne predominantly worked outdoors to produce this striking oil painting, embracing the Mediterranean light to enhance his interpretation of the red roofs against the blue sea. Cézanne exhibited this painting at the third Impressionist exhibition at the Rue Le Peletier in April 1877..
