Modern artist Egon Schiele was a major 20th century figurative painter from Austria who produced a plethora of vibrant paintings and drawings, the large majority of which depict the nude female form which marked him as an early exponent of expressionism. Although the woman has been depicted from behind, Schiele makes the portrait expressive by also capturing her from above. Schiele often worked from the top of a ladder to achieve an unexpected and unconventional composition.
