Modern artist Egon Schiele was a major 20th century figurative painter from Austria who produced a plethora of vibrant paintings and drawings, the large majority of which depict the nude female form which marked him as an early exponent of expressionism. In 1912 Schiele produced ‘Upright Standing Woman’ which features a red-haired woman clutching at a green dress. Schiele included smaller vertical lines on top of the principal contours of the woman’s body in a bid to create a three-dimensional appearance and an increase in tone.
