Modern artist August Macke was one of the leading members of German Expressionism (The Blue Rider) who also integrated his painting into the arrival of the Avant-Garde movement in Europe. In 1914 Macke produced ‘The Casbah’, inspired by his trips to Tunisia, North Africa. The distorted forms of the architecture have been highlighted by the bold vivid colours used by Macke creating a beautiful interpretation of the fortress. His work displays the uncanny influence of Cubism and Fauvism, seamlessly bringing together classic elements from both movements.
