Modern artist August Macke was one of the leading members of German Expressionism (The Blue Rider) who also integrated his painting into the arrival of the Avant-Garde movement in Europe. ‘Coloured Composition (Homage to Johann Sebastian Bach)’ is a busy canvas filled with curved and straight abstract shapes. Macke has used colour to add depth to the painting, placing lighter colours such as orange and yellow against the dark grey and blue tones. His work displays the uncanny influence of Cubism and Fauvism, seamlessly bringing together classic elements from both movements.
