Modern artist Rene Magritte was a Belgian surrealist artist, known for depicting ordinary objects in an unusual context, challenging the observer's perceptions of reality. ‘The Empire of Light’ is the title of a succession of paintings by Magritte which depict a paradoxical image of a nocturnal landscape beneath a sunlit sky. This painting is the second in the series in which the luminosity of the sky makes the empty darkness of a house lit up by its interior lights even more impenetrable than it would normally seem.
