Édouard Manet was one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life, a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. In 1881 Manet produced ‘The Bench’, oil on canvas painting depicting a garden with an abundance of red roses with a sandy path leading to an iron bench.
