Édouard Manet was one of the first 19th century artists to paint modern life, a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. ‘Berthe Morisot with a Bouquet of Violets’ was produced by Manet in 1872 and depicts fellow painter Berthe Morisot who greatly influenced his work. Manet painted the artist with black eyes, although hers were actually green, reflecting the darkness of her dress creating a moody portrait.
