Following the outbreak of the Second World War, the British government introduced food rationing – a scheme designed to ensure fair shares for all at a time of national shortage. Throughout the war, sugar was one of the main food groups to be limited. It wasn’t until the 5th February 1953 that sweets stopped being rationed and children all over Britain rushed straight to their nearest sweet-shop.
