Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian modern artist and sculptor who mainly worked in France. In 1914 he met art dealer Paul Guillaume who was regarded as one of the main patrons and visionary supporters of early 20th century modern art. For this portrait Modigliani captured Guillaume looking directly at the viewer, his dark suit standing out against the red background. Like most of Modigliani’s portraits, Guillaume has been depicted with an elongated face and neck and almond shaped eyes.
