In 1917 Italian modern artist Amedeo Modigliani met Jeanne Hébuterne who was also a painter and model. The two fell in love and Hébuterne became a principle subject for Modigliani’s work. For ‘Jeanne Hebuterne in a Yellow Jumper’ Modigliani depicted the model with emphasised hips and thighs, mimicking the representation of women in ancient Greek and Egyptian sculpture which Modigliani had been exploring.
