In 1916 Italian modern artist Amedeo Modigliani was commissioned by his friend and art dealer Leopold Zborowski to paint a series of nudes. ‘Reclining Nude on White Cushion’ was influenced by Italian Renaissance representations of Venus and other idealised female figures. At the time this nude was considered shocking, partly because the woman was depicted with body hair, but also because the painting has not been rooted in mythology- highlighting it's eroticism.
