Frida Kahlo was a Mexican surrealist artist recognised for her self portrait paintings. Inspired by the country’s popular culture, she explored questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, and class in Mexican society. In 1942 she produced ‘Self Portrait with Monkey and Parrot’ in which she depicts herself with a stern look drawing attention to her thick black eyebrows, her trademark feature.
