Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. Degas produced a series of coloured pastel drawings of dancers including ‘Blue Dancers' which depicts four ballerinas in lavender-blue costumes dancing in a recital, a performance of music by a small group. The use of blue paste and flowing composition creates harmony amongst the dancers.
