Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. The cirque Fernando was a French circus located near the Place Pigalle in Paris and was close to where Degas used to live. For this painting Degas captured the performer, Miss La La, suspended by her teeth as she is hoisted up to the roof of the circus. By depicting her from below, Degas places the viewer amongst the audience creating a sense of intimacy. This print is colour matched to the original and approved by the National Gallery. Every purchase supports the work of the museum.
