Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. In 1870 Degas produced ‘The Opera Orchestra’ which features a number of musicians seated in the orchestra pit including the composer Emmanuel Chabrier and the flutist Joseph-Henri Altès who were friends of the artist. Degas produced a number of studies, allowing him to create an accurate depiction of the scene.
