Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. In 1876 Degas produced 'The Race Course' which provided him with the opportunity to depict the traditional subject matter of horses and their riders, but in a more modern context of horse racing.
