Edgar Degas was a 19th century French Impressionist painter mainly recognised for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Degas sought to capture fleeting moments in the flow of modern life and particularly identified with the subject of dance. In 1873 Degas produced ‘A Cotton Office in New Orleans’ which depicts the interior of his maternal uncle Michel Musson’s cotton firm in New Orleans. Musson alongside other family members is shown engaged in various business and leisure activities while raw cotton rests on the table in the middle. The painting shares similarities with Degas’s paintings of ballet rehearsals as the men are gathered in casual groups while some have assumed balletic positions, such as the figure on the left resting his arms on the window sill.
