Modern artist Henri Émile Benoît Matisse was a French visual artist, known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. In 1941 Henri Matisse produced ‘Jazz’, a limited edition art book containing prints accompanied by his thoughts. The majority of the images were inspired by Matisse's memories of the circus. ‘The Codomas’ depicts a famous trapeze act consisting of two brothers, identified as the two yellow shapes against the green card. The black and yellow grid symbolizes the safety net that hangs beneath.
