Georgia O’Keeffe was a key pioneer in the emergence of American modern art and was best known for her sensuous paintings recording the natural world. O’Keeffe produced a range of near-abstract artworks depicting natural forms including ‘Dark and Lavender Leaf’ in 1931. O' Keeffe situated the autumnal heart-shaped leaf in the centre of the canvas. The smaller leaf from a lavender tree has been produced in a lighter orange to distinguish it from the foliage below.
