Georgia O’Keeffe was a key pioneer in the emergence of American modern art and was best known for her sensuous paintings recording the natural world. During the mid-1920s O’Keeffe started to produce near-abstract artworks of natural forms including ‘Black Hollyhock Blue Larkspur’. This extraordinary painting highlights O’Keeffe’s ability to create vivid and imaginative compositions. The maroon black petals of the hollyhock fill the entire right-hand side of the picture plane which enhances the smaller blue larkspur flowers.
