Mark Rothko was a Latvian-born American abstract painter and was associated with the American abstract expressionism movement of modern art. In 'Untitled (Red)' paint drips seem to run up the canvas. Rothko would often flip a painting while working on it, sometimes even changing the orientation completely at a late stage.
