Iconic Pre 1900 impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir produced 'At the Theatre' in 1876 and depicts two young women sitting in a box at the theatre. The stage is hidden and one of the women is looking away with the back of her bonnet hiding most of the other sitter's face. This sense of mystery is enhanced by the closer woman's pose, leaning forward as though something has absorbed her attention. During the 19th century, attending the theatre was an important social event so the sitter may have spotted someone she knew in the audience.
