Iconic Pre 1900 impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir's 'Dance in the City ‘was commissioned by French art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel in 1883 and depicts a couple dancing in a ballroom. The models are artist Suzanne Valadon and Renoir's friend Paul Auguste Lhôte. By capturing Valadon from the back Renoir has drawn the viewer to the couple's close embrace and her extravagant white silk dress.
