Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a French late 19th-century artist and leading figure in the development of the Impressionist style. Gabrielle Renard was an important member of Renoir’s family, first becoming their nanny and subsequently a frequent model for the artist. For this portrait, Renoir depicted Gabrielle wearing a revealing chemise looking down towards the ground. She is also wearing a green crystal necklace and holds a purse, objects owned by his wife used for the painting to create a sumptuous scene.
