Modern French impressionist artist Paul Cézanne compared the Bay of Marseille in Provence to a playing card. He believed the configuration of the landscape, with its strong colours and simple shapes, reflected the features of a deck of cards. Using a complex grid of horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines ‘The Bay of Marseille, Seen from L’Estaque’ is an excellent example of Cézanne's ability to create a structured landscape that still looked towards the innovations of Cubism.
