In his final years modern French impressionist artist Paul Cézanne produced ‘The Bend in the Road’. This period of his life became overshadowed by troubling events, including the onset of diabetes in 1890, destabilizing Cézanne's personality and encouraging him to become more of a recluse. Cézanne threw himself into his work and started experimenting with freer hand brushstrokes. The artist even started embracing cubist techniques, demonstrated by his depiction of this isolated road leading from his bespoke studio in Les Lauves, north of Aix-en-Provence.
