In his final years modern French impressionist artist Paul Cézanne produced ‘La Montagne Sainte-Victoire et le Château Noir’, a range of limestone mountains in the south of the Aix-en-Provence region of France. The saffron-coloured building in the centre of the image is the Château Noir, a neo-gothic castle that captivated Cézanne, inspiring him to repeatedly depict the building. Cézanne's use of cool colours for the landscape and warm colours for the Château demonstrates his ability to create harmony within an otherwise Impressionist painting.
