Modern French impressionist artist Paul Cézanne painted this summer landscape in his native Provence in the south of France. Cezanne has captured the volume and texture of the large poplar trees using vertical and oblique brushstrokes of green and blue. The natural forms of the trees contrast with the geometric man-made structures in the centre of the picture, but the use of a natural colour pallet means the buildings sit perfectly within the landscape.
