Modern French impressionist artist Paul Cézanne's avant-garde Impressionist style inspired artists such as Picasso to establish Cubism. Cezanne often used repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes and planes of colour to form complex paintings. During the final years of his life, Cezanne painted the same objects including a green vase, rum bottle, and apples over and over again. His interest was not in the objects themselves but in using them to experiment with shape, colour, and lighting.
