Modern French impressionist artist Paul Cézanne's avant-garde Impressionist style inspired artists such as Picasso to establish Cubism. Cezanne often used repetitive, exploratory brushstrokes and planes of colour to form complex paintings. In 1895 Cezanne produced ‘Still Life with a Curtain and Fruit’ one of his greatest still live depictions. The painting is dominated by a balance of form and colour which creates a feeling of unity.
