Modern artist Egon Schiele was a major 20th century figurative painter from Austria who produced a plethora of vibrant paintings and drawings, the large majority of which depict the nude female form which marked him as an early exponent of expressionism. ‘Portrait of a Woman’ has t he woman has been dressed in a black and white outfit which contrasts against the redness of her lips and hair, further enhancing her beauty. Schiele used charcoal rather than pencil for this drawing as the medium offered a greater capacity for textural experimentation.
