Modern artist Egon Schiele was a major 20th century figurative painter from Austria who produced a plethora of vibrant paintings and drawings, the large majority of which depict the nude female form which marked him as an early exponent of expressionism. In his early years he was mentored by another successful Austrian artist -Gustav Klimt. Klimt's canvases were populated with lavishly decorated figures and patterns and his influence can be seen in Schiele’s ‘Act Against Coloured Material' as the nude woman reclines against a multicoloured striped textile.
