Modern artist Egon Schiele was a major 20th century figurative painter from Austria who produced a plethora of vibrant paintings and drawings, the large majority of which depict the nude female form which marked him as an early exponent of expressionism. He produced a number of portraits of his wife including ‘Seated Nude Woman’. For this painting Schiele captured Harms from above and overlapped the principle contours of his line with shades of yellow and green alluding to his wife’s internal musculoskeletal structure.
