Modern artist Egon Schiele was a major 20th century figurative painter from Austria who produced a plethora of vibrant paintings and drawings, the large majority of which depict the nude female form which marked him as an early exponent of expressionism. Schiele depicted intertwining figures in ‘Umarung (Embrace)’. The semi nude female figure with red hair mainly dominates the painting as her arm stretches around the second figure who’s torso is cut off, making it hard to define whether the brown haired nude is male or female.
