Modern artist Egon Schiele was a major 20th century figurative painter from Austria who produced a plethora of vibrant paintings and drawings, the large majority of which depict the nude female form which marked him as an early exponent of expressionism. ‘Male Nude with Raised Arms - Self Portrait’ features a twisted depiction of his nude body paired with a range of violet, grey and yellow hues. Schiele used a distorted composition and unusual colour pallet to reflect his complex personality.
