Italian modern artist Amedeo Modigliani was an Italian Jewish painter and sculptor who mainly worked in France and in 1917 he met Jeanne Hébuterne who was also a painter and model. The two fell in love and Hébuterne became a principle subject for Modigliani’s work. For ‘Portrait of Jeanne Hébuterne in a Large Hat’ Modigliani depicted the model wearing a large summer hat and like most of Modigliani’s portraits, Hébuterne has been captured with an elongated face and neck and almond shaped eyes.
