In 1916 Italian modern artist Amedeo Modigliani painted ‘Female Nude’ which was a radical reworking of the conventions of figurative European painting at the time. The sensuous pose of the sleeping model with her head titled to one side is typical of the classical nude, however her elongated face and simplified features derive from the traditions of non-western art such as African sculpture.
