In 1916 Italian modern artist Amedeo Modigliani was commissioned by his friend and art dealer Leopold Zborowski to paint a series of nudes. ‘Reclining Nude’ was influenced by Italian Renaissance representations of Venus and other idealised female figures. The model has been painted close up and from above, and her pale body spans the entire canvas.
